Short answer: a 175 lb grappler burns roughly 600 calories in a standard one-hour gi class at moderate effort. Drilling-heavy sessions land closer to 450. An hour of hard rolling can reach 880 to 1,100. Body weight and how hard you actually went matter far more than gi versus no-gi.

  • The calculator uses the standard MET equation: calories = MET x 3.5 x body weight in kg / 200 x minutes.

How many calories does jiu-jitsu actually burn?

For most adults, a one-hour BJJ class burns somewhere between 400 and 1,000 calories. That range is annoyingly wide, and it is wide for a reason: a 140 lb blue belt drilling armbars and a 230 lb brown belt doing eight rounds of competition-pace no-gi are doing completely different amounts of work under the same label.

The three things that move the number most, in order, are body weight, how long you were actually moving, and how hard you went. Everything else is noise by comparison. If you weigh 40 lb more than your training partner and you both roll the same six rounds, you burned roughly 25 percent more calories doing it, without trying harder.

How this calculator works

It uses the MET method, which is the same approach behind most published exercise energy tables. A MET is a multiple of your resting metabolic rate. Sitting still is 1 MET. Walking briskly is about 3.5. Hard rolling sits above 10, which is why a good round leaves you on your back staring at the ceiling.

The equation is:

Calories = MET x 3.5 x body weight (kg) / 200 x minutes

Your session type sets a base MET. Intensity, gi or no-gi, and your age range each apply a modifier. The result is then shown with a plus or minus 20 percent band, because that is roughly how much two people of the same weight doing the same session can differ.

Assumptions worth knowing about

  • Duration means mat time, not the hour you were at the gym. Standing around talking about a technique burns close to resting rate.
  • The MET equation assumes a resting metabolic rate of 3.5 mL of oxygen per kg per minute. Heavier and more muscular people tend to sit slightly below that, which is one reason the estimate carries a range.
  • The age adjustment is a simplification. Two 50-year-olds with different body composition and training history can differ more than the adjustment itself.
  • The calculator does not model the calories you keep burning after training. That effect is real but modest, usually well under 10 percent of the session total.
  • The competition match figure is a rate, not something to multiply out to an hour. Nobody competes for an hour straight.

Calories burned by training intensity

Intensity changes the number by roughly a third from top to bottom. The table below assumes a 175 lb (79 kg) grappler training for 60 minutes in the gi.

The jump from a regular class to an hour of hard rolling is close to 300 calories, which is more than most people gain from any supplement, gadget or diet tweak they will spend money on this year.

Calories burned by body weight

Body weight is the single biggest input, and it is the one nobody can talk their way around. Moving a heavier body through the same scramble costs more. The table below assumes a 60-minute regular gi class at moderate intensity.

There is a catch that trips people up when they are losing weight. As you get lighter, the same class burns fewer calories. Drop 25 lb and your one-hour class is worth about 85 fewer calories than it used to be. The training did not get easier. The arithmetic changed.

Does the gi burn more calories than no-gi?

A little, and less than people assume. The gi adds thermal load, and gripping cloth for five minutes straight is a genuine isometric effort that no-gi mostly does not ask for. Against that, no-gi tends to run at a faster pace with more scrambling and fewer stalled grip battles.

Published comparisons of the two are mixed and mostly small-sample. The calculator settles on a 3 percent bump for the gi, which is honest about the direction while acknowledging that the difference is smaller than the error bar on the estimate itself. If you switched from no-gi to gi tomorrow and changed nothing else, the calorie difference would be about 20 calories an hour. A banana is 100.

Drilling versus rolling: where the calories actually come from

Rolling burns roughly twice what drilling does, minute for minute. A drilling-heavy technique class at 5.3 METs and an hour of hard rolling at 10.3 METs are almost exactly a factor of two apart.

This matters more than it sounds if you are over 40, because the sessions that burn the most are also the ones that cost the most in recovery. Six hard rounds three times a week will out-burn any drilling schedule, and it will also be the thing that puts your knee in a sleeve for a month. The people who keep training into their 50s tend to be the ones who took the 601-calorie class instead of the 991-calorie one, four times a week instead of two.

Calories burned is the input people obsess over and the one they can least control. A hard hour might buy you 900 calories. A large post-training burrito and a beer takes it back in fifteen minutes.

Jiu-jitsu is a good weight loss tool for reasons that have little to do with the number this calculator produces. You show up because there is a class at 7pm and people expect you, not because you scheduled cardio. You get progressively fitter without ever doing an interval session on purpose. And an hour of rolling does not leave most people ravenous the way an hour of running does.

What the calculator cannot see

Six things change your real number and none of them are inputs here, because asking for them would make the tool worse without making it much more accurate.

  • Body composition. Two people at 190 lb with different lean mass burn different amounts. Muscle is metabolically busier than fat.
  • Skill level. A white belt muscles through positions and burns more doing less. Efficiency is the whole point of technique, and it costs you calories in the best possible way.
  • Work to rest ratio. Five-minute rounds with one minute rest is a different session than five on, five off, even with the same round count.
  • Room temperature. A hot gym in August raises the cost of the same work.
  • Who you rolled with. Three rounds with someone 40 lb heavier is not three rounds with a training partner your size.
  • Fitness level. A well-conditioned grappler does the same work at a lower physiological cost.

None of this makes the estimate useless. It makes it an estimate. Use it to compare sessions against each other rather than as a number to eat back precisely.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this BJJ calorie calculator?

Expect it to land within about 20 percent of your true expenditure, which is why every result is shown as a range rather than a single figure. MET-based estimates are the standard approach in exercise science, but they describe a typical person rather than you specifically. A chest-strap heart rate monitor worn during training will be closer for your body, and a metabolic cart in a lab would be closer still.

What MET values does the calculator use?

Base values run from 5.3 for technique and drilling to 10.3 for hard rolling. Both come from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities, codes 15430 and 15425, which cover martial arts at slower practice pace and at moderate to vigorous pace. Competition training (11.0) and competition matches (12.0) are extrapolated above the published vigorous value and are labelled as such.

Do you burn more calories in the gi or no-gi?

The gi burns slightly more, around 3 percent, from added thermal load and sustained grip work. For a one-hour session that is roughly 20 calories. Research comparing the two is mixed and the difference is smaller than the margin of error on any calorie estimate, so it is not a sensible reason to pick one over the other.

Does drilling burn as many calories as rolling?
